What Is Plaster Skimming?

Skimming plastering is where a finishing plaster is used on walls or new plasterboard to create a smooth finish. This allows you to then paint over it or apply wallpaper.

What’s the difference between plastering and skimming? The terms plastering and skimming are often used interchangeably, but they are different processes. Traditional plastering is a long process where different coats of plaster need to be applied, and each coat needs to dry before applying the next coat.

But plastering has adapted over the years, and sometimes only one coat of skim plaster is applied to speed things up. The result is a great finish that looks like a traditional plaster finish but is quicker and more convenient to apply.

Do You Require Skimming?

A skim layer is necessary to achieve a smooth finish. Sometimes the finish is too rough to decorate, and a skim plasterer skims the surface so the walls have a smooth and continuous surface with no sign of joints. It also has a glossy appearance that many people prefer.

If you already have a plaster wall that is in good condition with no chips or cracks, it probably does not need to be skimmed. Sometimes you can paint directly onto the board instead. Skimming provides a better finish, but it also adds extra soundproofing, so it is usually preferred.

How We Can Help

Contact us to arrange your plaster skimming. We will look at the surface and let you know whether we think it is needed, because it may be that skimming is not required. If skimming is required, we will create a professional, smooth finish so you can paint or wallpaper the surface however you wish.
